Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Gender inequality remains a significant issue in political leadership, particularly in countries like Nigeria, where women are underrepresented in political offices. In Ilorin East LGA, Kwara State, women face multiple barriers to political leadership, including cultural norms, limited access to resources, and discrimination. This study will examine the extent of gender inequality in political leadership in Ilorin East, exploring the challenges that women face in gaining political representation and leadership roles within the local government.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to increase women's participation in politics, gender inequality continues to limit women’s representation in political leadership positions in Ilorin East LGA. This study seeks to explore the underlying causes of gender inequality in political leadership, identify the barriers faced by women, and assess the impact of these challenges on women’s participation in local governance.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the extent of gender inequality in political leadership in Ilorin East LGA.
  2. To explore the challenges that women face in accessing political leadership positions in Ilorin East LGA.
  3. To evaluate the impact of gender inequality on the political representation of women in Ilorin East LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Gender inequality significantly limits women’s participation in political leadership in Ilorin East LGA.
  2. Women face significant barriers to political leadership positions in Ilorin East LGA.
  3. Gender inequality negatively affects the political representation of women in Ilorin East LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to understanding the gendered dynamics of political leadership in Nigeria, with a specific focus on Ilorin East LGA. The findings will be valuable for policymakers, women’s advocacy groups, and political leaders seeking to address gender disparities in political representation.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on gender inequality in political leadership in Ilorin East LGA, Kwara State. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing sensitive information on gender-related challenges and biases in the reporting of gender inequality issues.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Gender Inequality: The unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender, particularly women’s underrepresentation in political leadership.
